Scaling Past the Slashdot Effect: The Battle-Hardened Guide to HAProxy 1.4

The "Slashdot Effect" Does Not Take Prisoners

We have all been there. It is 2:00 AM on a Tuesday. Your marketing team just launched a campaign, or maybe you got lucky and hit the front page of Digg. Suddenly, your Apache workers are maxing out, RAM is swapping to disk, and your latency metrics are bleeding red. If you are serving content from a single box, you are already dead.

The solution is not just "add more RAM." The solution is horizontal scaling. Today, we are going to look at HAProxy 1.4—the only open-source load balancer stable enough to trust with production traffic. I have used this in environments pushing 50,000 concurrents, and it simply works, provided your underlying VPS handles the I/O correctly.

Why HAProxy over Hardware?

In the corporate boardrooms of Oslo, vendors will try to sell you an F5 Big-IP box for 100,000 NOK. For banking infrastructure? Maybe. For a high-traffic web application? It is overkill. HAProxy runs on commodity Linux, handles SSL offloading (though stunnel is often preferred in front of it in 1.4), and costs you exactly zero kroner in licensing.

The Setup: HAProxy on CentOS 5/6

Let’s assume you are running a standard LAMP stack. You need one load balancer and two web nodes. Here is the architecture we deploy on standard CoolVDS instances:

  • LB01: HAProxy (Public IP)
  • WEB01: Apache/Nginx (Private Network)
  • WEB02: Apache/Nginx (Private Network)

First, grab the package. If you are on CentOS, ensure you have the EPEL repository enabled.

The Configuration That Won't Sleep

The default config is garbage for high loads. Open /etc/haproxy/haproxy.cfg. We need to define our listening frontend and our backend server pool. We are going to use the leastconn algorithm—this is crucial. Round-robin is fine for static content, but for dynamic PHP applications, you want to send traffic to the server that isn't currently choking on a heavy SQL query.

Pro Tip: Notice the cookie SERVERID line? That is session stickiness. If you are running a Magento or osCommerce store, without this, users will lose their shopping carts every time the load balancer switches them to a different server.

The Hidden Bottleneck: Virtualization Steal Time

Here is the uncomfortable truth most hosting providers in Norway won't tell you. You can have the perfect HAProxy config, but if your VPS is on an oversold OpenVZ node, you will suffer from CPU Steal Time. HAProxy is event-driven; it needs CPU cycles instantly when a packet arrives.

If your neighbor on the physical host is crunching video files, your load balancer waits. That millisecond wait manifests as latency for your user.

Keeping your load balancers and database servers physically located in Norway—or at least within the EEA—simplifies your compliance with the Datatilsynet requirements immensely.

Furthermore, peering matters. Our datacenters are directly connected to the NIX (Norwegian Internet Exchange) in Oslo. Pinging a local user from a server in Texas takes 140ms. Pinging them from our Oslo facility takes 4ms. In the world of high-frequency trading or just snappy e-commerce, that difference is revenue.
